On A Roll (Summer Edition)

Test your piano students' music theory with these summer-themed music games!

This bundle contains 6 no-prep, dice-based music games plus a bonus improv activity.

WHAT IS IT?

  • 6 games that just need downloading and printing. No cutting, folding, or gluing (and laminating is optional!)
  • One improv activity that uses dice, the piano, and your students' imagination
  • All you need are
    • Two dice (or a spinner or Google dice - yup, you can just Google 'Dice' and use that!)
    • Playing pieces (one for each player)
    • Counters (there are printable ones you can cut out and use, or you can source your own - you can use anything from buttons to candies!)

This one bundle covers many different musical theory topics:

  • Rhythms (two different levels of difficulty)
  • Dynamics
  • Basic note values
  • Piano keys
  • Treble clef note reading
  • Bass clef note reading
  • Stave intervals
  • Improvisation

THE GAMES ARE:

1. Shake It Up
This game turns rhythm drilling into a race to fill up your milkshake fridge.

  • Roll two dice to find a box on the grid.
  • Clap the rhythm in the grid, then check your milkshake fridge to see if you've got a flavour that matches the rhythm.  If you do, cover it up!
  • Watch out for the Capyshaker - if your dice roll leads to him, you have to remove a counter from your fridge!

Two levels of difficulty:

  • Level one features crotchets, two quavers, four semiquavers, minims (quarter note, two eighth notes, four sixteenth notes, half notes)
  • Level two features two quavers, quaver + two semiquavers, two semiquavers + quaver, crotchets

(two eighth notes, eighth note + two sixteenth notes, two sixteenth notes + eighth note, quarter notes)

2. DOLPHINS AND JELLYFISH

Reinforce dynamics in a way that doesn't feel repetitive.

  • Roll two dice to find a box on the grid
  • Identify the dynamic in the box and move to the next matching space on the board.
  • Land on a leaping dolphin to jump to a higher space. Land on a jellyfish and slide down to a lower space.
  • First to the end is the winner.

3. ICE CREAM PINCHER

Reinforce note and rest values through repeated counting (I'd say it's low-pressure but at any point, your ice creams might get pinched!)

  • Roll the dice to find a box on the grid
  • Identify the note or rest value
  • Place that many ice cream tokens on your board
  • If your last token is placed on top of a crab, you have to remove all ice creams until you reach the previous crab!
  • The first to fill their board is the winner

4. 3 BIRDS IN A ROW

Test students' note-reading skills in a more interesting way than just holding up flashcards.

  • Roll the dice and find the number and letter on the grid
  • Find the matching note on the bird board and cover it up with a token
  • The first to get three tokens in a row is the winner

Treble clef and bass clef boards included.

5. GONE CAMPIN'

Drill piano keys, treble clef notes, or bass clef notes (or swap between all three!)

  • Roll the dice and find the box on the board (you may have noticed by now, there's a lot of rolling dice to find notes. Students love rolling dice!)
  • Identify the note in the box
  • Move to the next matching space on the board.
  • Camping animals along the way will send you forward, back, give you extra turns, or cause you to miss a turn
  • The first to the end is the winner!

6. SUNNY INTERVALS

Reinforce intervals in an interesting way that students won't find repetitive.

  • Roll the dice to move around the sun board.
  • Land on an interval space and find that matching interval on the sunny grid. Cover it up with a token.
  • Land on a rainy cloud and you have to lose a token from the sunny grid.
  • Land on a sunglasses-wearing sun and you get a bonus token!
  • The first to get three tokens in a row on the sunny grid is the winner.

BONUS ROLLY IMPROV (SUMMER)

An improvisation activity with prompts guaranteed to make your students laugh and get creative!

  • Roll the dice to get a character.
  • Roll again to get an emotion.
  • Roll once more to get an activity.
  • Create an improvisation that brings them all together
(you could get something like "The tired octopus enters a volleyball tournament"!)

These games are perfect for when you want a game but don't want to do any extra prep!
