Reinforce your teenage students' music theory with this bundle of Japan-themed music games and music theory worksheets.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

  • The Case of the Missing Manga
A box of highly sought-after manga has gone missing from a bookstore in Tokyo. The store owner is beside herself and needs your help to work out who stole the books.

This is a series of five theory worksheet puzzles.
Upon completion, each worksheet reveals the identity of an innocent suspect. One suspect is left over...the culprit!

  • Four sets of question cards:
    • Pattern identification
    • Ledger lines
    • Intervals
    • Major/minor triads

The game instructions suggest which question pack to use with which game, but they're pretty interchangeable depending on what you want to test your students.

  • Card backings (optional)

  • 6 games:
    • Onsen Eggs
Players aim to be the first to collect three onsen eggs. Onsen eggs are rewarded by the challenge capybaras when a player successfully completes a scale challenge, a sight-reading challenge, and an improvisation challenge.
Players move around the board by identifying intervals on question cards.
    • Snapshot of Japan
Players race around the board by identifying major/minor triads, aiming to be the first to collect four different pictures of Japanese landmarks.
    • Out of Stock
A reverse bingo-style game where players start with a full vending machine and answer ledger line questions to see if they can remove cans from their vending machine.
    • Chopstick and Sushi
A snakes and ladders-style game where players identify patterns on question cards to determine how many spaces to move.
    • Wrestle with Rhythms
Players collect rhythms as they move around the board. BUT they're only allowed past the sumo wrestlers if they can correctly clap their rhythm along with the metronome.
    • Japan Facts
Players discover which fact on the card is true by identifying the correct name for the chord. Learn about Japan while reinforcing chord theory!

  • Japanese Music Overview & Improvisation Activity
A brief overview of Japanese music, complete with scannable QR codes that take you to YouTube videos of Japanese music.
An improvisation activity to create two Japanese-inspired melodies.
